When her daughter is brutally murdered, Mildred Hayes confronts the local police, whose incompetent investigation of the crime reveals small-town lethargy and prejudice. The astonishing twists and turns of the plot and lurches from black comedy to sudden violence are surmounted by an outstanding performance by Frances McDormand as Mildred for which she won best actress at the Oscars.
